England captain John Terry has all but been ruled out of tomorrow's Euro 2008 qualifier against Russia, only hours after being passed fit to play.

The Chelsea skipper, who had recovered from the knee problem that kept him out of Saturday's victory against Estonia, suffered a locked knee training in Moscow today.

Head coach Steve McClaren said: "John Terry is almost certainly ruled out of tomorrow's match. His knee locked towards the end of training and he could not complete the session."

Terry, who sat out the 3-0 win over Estonia, was given the all clear earlier today with the proviso that he had to undergo surgery on the knee soon.

McClaren is now likely to bring Sol Campbell back into the fray after he featured alongside Rio Ferdinand on Saturday.

Mica Richards should be retained at right back, while Joleon Lescott, Phil Neville and Nicky Shorey are the contenders to fill the void left by the injury to left back Ashley Cole.

McClaren also faces a tough decision in the centre of midfield, where there have been calls to return Frank Lampard to play alongside Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard.

Aston Villa captain Gareth Barry, however, has been outstanding in Lampard's absence and would be hard done by if left out of tomorrow's game.

If Lampard is to be inlcuded a more likely casualty is Shaun Wright-Phillips, who despite scoring the first against Estonia, was erratic in possession and may be a bit lightweight for an away game against more illustrious opposition.

England are three points behind Croatia - with both having played 10 games - and five ahead of Russsia, though Guus Hiddink's side have a game in hand.
