Soccer: Premier League
Ashley Young's 89th-minute strike snatched a 1-0 win for Manchester United against Newcastle last night, which keeps them on course for a top-four finish.
But the game was marred by a first-half fracas between Northern Ireland international Evans and the Magpies’ Senegal frontman Papiss Cisse, with television replays suggesting both men spat as tempers flared.
United manager Louis Van Gaal says he couldn’t see the incident: “I didn’t see that from the bench. It’s too far to see spitting, so I cannot judge that. But I cannot imagine that Jonny Evans, because he is a very modest person, that he could do that. I cannot imagine.”
Meanwhile Liverpool continued their unbeaten 2015 league form with yet another impressive win, this time against Burnley. Jordan Henderson scored the first and set up Daniel Sturridge for the second in 2-0 win.
Rodgers hailed his vice captain post-match; “He is improving all the time and as he matures even more tactically he will become even better. He has always had athleticism, he is born with a natural gift to run, and tactically he is improving all the time and his passing is improving and he is becoming one of the real leaders of this team.”
Meanwhile Chelsea remain top of the league thanks to a 1-0 win against West Ham, Eden Hazard the first-half goalscorer there.
Ireland versus England
The Republic of Ireland's friendly against England is to kick-off at 1.00pm on Sunday June 7th "following discussions with the FA, broadcasters, and the Gardaí." The early kick off is an attempt to ease any possible fan trouble.
Rugby: Six Nations
The Irish squad has been reduced to just 17 for today's open training session in Belfast. With it being a regular Pro12 week, there has been no additions to the match-day 23 that beat England 19-9 last Sunday. Three players – Jonathan Sexton (hamstring) along with Seán O'Brien and Jared Payne (both concussion) – have been stood down with another three released to their province. Roscrea and Newbridge played out an 8-8 draw in Wednesdays Leinster School's Senior Cup semi final, meaning they will have to do it all again, and that'll most likely be next Monday in Donnybrook.
GAA: Galvin on Galvin
Former Limerick midfielder John Galvin says that Paul Galvin has nothing to lose upon his Kerry return, whilst for Ger Hartmann, the Limerick-based physical therapist, who nine years ago convinced Séamus Moynihan to retire and made him swear he'd never change his mind, there is little doubt Galvin has made the right decision to come out of retirement.
Hartmann would have worked closely with Galvin down the years and he says the first question he would ask about Paul Galvin is not so much why he came back, but why he left in the first place.
Galway say that Joe Canning will not be rushed back from his broken finger injury for the county's next league game with Kilkenny, it's more likely he will return for the penultimate game with Cork on Sunday week.
Golf: McIlroy takes positives
World number one Rory McIlroy says rustiness and bad weather was a major factor in him missing the Honda Classic cut, following a three week lay-off. Yet he's now ready to master Doral's Blue Monster after a week of practice. "Sometimes you need a kick in the backside to make you realise what you need to do."
Boxing: Katie eager to do battle
Katie Taylor is looking forward to the first European Games in Baku where Ireland will send a strong team of 62 to the first edition of the Games.
Having been nominated as one of the athlete ambassadors she’s relishing facing “all of the usual suspects” – the likes of Sofya Ochigava, Estelle Moseley and Yana Alekseeva will all be in action at the games. We’re just 99 days out from the opening ceremony for what’s set to be an interesting sport experiment.
What to watch out for:
