Soccer:Sunderland's James McClean will need to put on one hell of a show at Stamford Bridge tomorrow if he is to convince Giovanni Trapattoni he is worth a punt ahead of Euro 2012.

The Italian, who arrived in town this afternoon for the Soccer Writers’ Association of Ireland’s annual banquet, will attend Sunderland’s visit to Chelsea tomorrow, but today he reiterated his view that there will be few surprises in his squad selection for the trip to Poland in June.

Like the Norwich City duo of Wes Hoolahan and Anthony Pilkington, the uncapped McClean is hoping to force his way into the squad for the tournament that will see Ireland pitted against Croatia, Italy and world champions Spain in the group stages.

The former Derry City winger has scored twice in five appearances for Sunderland – once in the league against Wigan and once against Peterborough in the FA Cup.

His form, however, which has won him many admirers in his brief stint in the north-east, is likely to be overlooked by Trapattoni, who is keen to reward the players who helped Ireland to their first major tournament in 10 years. It is also McClean's misfortune that, with Aiden McGeady, Damien Duff and Stephen Hunt, Ireland are well stocked with left wingers.

“We have other opportunities, other options, and we have to look at them for the future, but not now,” said Trapattoni. “The players who achieved qualification they deserve to come with us.

“We will pay attention to the others, and we can call them but only in the case of injuries.”

The manager, meanwhile, welcomed Robbie Keane’s six-week loan move from LA Galaxy to Aston Villa, but his primary concern is that his captain and Ireland’s record goalscorer remains fit ahead of the summer.
