Uefa hopeful of full San Siro

Uefa are confident the San Siro will open to supporters in time for Celtic's trip to face AC Milan.

Uefa are confident the San Siro will open to supporters in time for Celtic's trip to face AC Milan.

The stadium was only open to Milan season-ticket holders for yesterday's Serie A match against Livorno, which was watched by a crowd of 21,000 fans.

But William Gaillard, Uefa's communications and public affairs director, believes the venue can be ready in time for March 7th, the date of the second leg of Celtic's Champions League last-16 clash.

Work to install turnstiles began last week, in the wake of government demands for improved facilities at Italian football grounds.

The death of a police officer at the Sicilian derby between Catania and Palermo prompted the action.

Gaillard said: "Although we have not received any official news from the Italian FA, I would imagine that what happened yesterday was a good rehearsal and the stadium would be at its normal capacity for the game between AC Milan and Celtic."

For security reasons, Milan could only admit registered supporters for yesterday's match.

They were initially told the match would have to be staged behind closed doors but were given dispensation to allow some supporters after stadium officials put 28 electronic turnstiles in place.

Should they be prevented from allowing supporters into the stadium for the Celtic match, the Stade de Geneve in Geneva has been mooted as an alternative venue.

Four clubs had to shut their doors to supporters for Serie A matches yesterday.
