Transfer news:Manchester United assistant coach Carlos Queiroz has shrugged off reported interest from Real Madrid about star winger Cristiano Ronaldo, insisting the player is going nowhere.

Reports in the Spanish press today suggest Ronaldo will be the big summer target for Madrid, who were also heavily linked to the Portuguese international last year.

However, Queiroz, who was manager at Madrid in 2003, is adamant the 21-year-old is not for sale.

"No (to a possible transfer). In addition to that, we are speaking with him about renewing his contract," Queiroz said in Marca.

Ronaldo's current contract ties him to Old Trafford until 2010.

"The club have a clear policy. It is not necessary that a player has to finish his contract before we think about renewing it," Queiroz added. "(Ryan) Giggs has been with us for 14 years and he has renewed his contract many times.

"This club do not need the agents to recognise the work of the players. We anticipate things ourselves and that is what we are going to do with Cristiano."

Speculation about a possible Madrid swoop for Ronaldo hit fever pitch during last summer's World Cup.

Ronaldo twice declared he wanted to quit Old Trafford for Spain, the second time coming in the wake of his antics in the World Cup quarter-final against England, where he appeared to be involved in getting United club-mate Wayne Rooney sent off.

However, Ronaldo ended up staying in Manchester and has been a revelation this season, scoring 13 goals already to help United go clear at the top of the Premiership.

Terry wanted assurance from Mourinho

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho revealed skipper John Terry wanted an assurance the Portuguese manager would be at Stamford Bridge next season before agreeing to sign a new contract.

Mourinho revealed last night that Terry is close to signing a new contract with the club and expects the deal to be done "in the next few days".

The Blues and England captain is set to put pen to paper on a deal that will make him the highest paid player in the Barclays Premiership - a package reportedly worth around £150,000 a week.

But Mourinho revealed his skipper had wanted an assurance the manager would be at Stamford Bridge next season.

Mourinho said: "John is almost signing a new contract. If he hasn't then he is doing that in the next few days.

"But, when he says it would be very difficult for him to play with another manager in his career and he would like to do it with me until the end of his career, it is because he accepts my philosophy as his.

"He feels comfortable with the work we do."

But when asked whether Terry had asked him outright whether he would be at the club next season, Mourinho replied: "Yes. My answer was 'I think so'.

Terry returned to full training this week and, although he still has some way to go to get back to full fitness, he could have an outside chance of returning against Blackburn in the Barclays Premiership next week.

Fulham set to land Smertin

Fulham will reportedly sign former Chelsea midfielder Alexei Smertin later this week.

Smertin had a medical and met his new team-mates at the club's training ground yesterday.

The Russia skipper joined Dinamo Moscow in March 2006 for £1million, but is no longer needed by the Russians.

He told The Sun: "It wasn't my decision to leave Dinamo. My club informed me that they aren't interested in me any more.

"My agent started to work and we got offers from Charlton Athletic, West Ham and Fulham. At the moment only Fulham's interest is continuing."
