Terry Venables insists a possible return to the England set-up does not mean he wants to eventually take over from Steve McClaren as national boss.

Venables, who took England to the semi-finals of Euro 96, has been tipped to be among the backroom staff of new boss McClaren, although no deal has been agreed yet.

"I am not about to join England's staff as a way of getting Steve McClaren's job," said Venables in his column in the News of the World. "I think it is important to get this out in the open, so there can be no distractions.

"Yes, I am very excited by the prospect of working with England again - although I must stress, the deal has to be finalised."

Venables confirmed McClaren has approached him about a possible role, adding: "My potential role with Steve is very exciting. He is offering me the freedom to take on as much as I want.

"I will obviously be involved around the matches and checking on players and he has already given me areas of the team he thinks need looking at."
