Blackburn have reportedly accepted an offer of €2.5million from Aston Villa for goalkeeper Brad Friedel.
The veteran American has been at Ewood Park for the past eight years but he told the club earlier this month that he wanted to move on.
Manchester City had also been linked with Friedel but Villa have now taken a big stride towards signing him.
Bringing in a new, experienced goalkeeper has been a priority for Martin O'Neill this summer, with a deal having been agreed for Friedel's compatriot Brad Guzan.
Scott Carson was O'Neill's first choice between the posts last term but he returned to Liverpool at the end of his loan spell and has since joined West Brom.
Villa will now be hoping to finalise the transfer of Friedel, who has been one of the most consistent keepers in the Premier League over the last decade.
Friedel's departure would leave a huge void at Blackburn and manager Paul Ince is likely to turn his attention to finding a replacement as quickly as possible.
Meanwhile, Middlesbrough midfielder Lee Cattermole has been given permission to talk to Wigan and undergo a medical after the clubs agreed an undisclosed fee.
But the Teessiders do not expect any deal to be completed until next week.
A spokesman said: "Boro have confirmed that they have agreed a fee with Wigan Athletic for the transfer of Lee Cattermole.
"The 20-year-old midfielder has been given permission to talk to Wigan, discuss personal terms and have a medical.
"No further news is expected until next week."
Cattermole was withdrawn from the squad for last night's 1-1 draw with Celtic in Portugal after Wigan tabled their improved offer.
It is understood Wigan have offered around €4.4million for the England Under-21 international.
