Weather disrupts cross-channel games

The freezing conditions across Britain have taken their toll on the St Stephen's Day football programme.

The freezing conditions across Britain have taken their toll on the St Stephen's Day football programme.

In England, the match between Bury and Bradford was called off on Christmas Eve - more than 48 hours in advance of the kick-off - due to a frozen pitch.

The League One game between Oldham and Tranmere was also postponed due to safety concerns over fans getting to the ground.

On top of that, Bristol Rovers v Walsall and Carlisle v Huddersfield were called off on Boxing Day morning, while in League Two Rotherham v Darlington, Port Vale v Burton and Notts County v Grimsby were also postponed.

In Scotland, the lower-league programme has already seen all but two of the games called off.

The Scottish Football League's operations director David Thomson said: "The cold snap has lasted almost a full week now and we have also looked at forecasts for the coming days and ordered inspections accordingly.

"Undersoil heating should help put the First Division games on at Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Partick Thistle, but there will be discussions with the police about approach roads."

The postponements come in the wake of a range of similar call-offs last weekend.
