Pre-season review:Former Chelsea defender Tal Ben Haim's own goal helped the Blues creep to a 1-0 victory against Portsmouth in what was the first chance to see Andre Villas-Boas' team in action.

Having played their 3-0 midweek victory over Wycombe behind closed doors, the Blues fielded completely different line-ups in each half as the recently-appointed Portuguese boss gave all his players a chance to gain pre-season fitness at Fratton Park.

Villas-Boas' side failed to get out of second gear in the first period but took the lead in the seventh minute when Ben Haim calamitously headed into his own net.

Substitute goalkeeper Hilario produced a superb save to stop Luke Varney's penalty after the break to help Chelsea eke out victory on the south coast.

Charlie Adam scored from the spot on his first start for the club as Kenny Dalglish's Liverpoolsecured another high-scoring friendly victory.

Having beaten Guangdong 4-3 in China three days ago, there were nine more goals in an entertaining 6-3 win over a Malaysian XI.

Adam was a lively presence in the opening exchanges and after 25 minutes played in Carroll, who was tugged back in the area and earned the penalty. Adam had to take the spot-kick twice but sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to make it 1-0.

Mohammad Safiq Rahim equalised with a fine free-kick five minutes from half-time.

Liverpool made 11 substitutions at the break and after 68 minutes David Ngog scored following some poor defending. The Frenchman added another moments later as the Reds swamped their opponents.

Maxi Rodriguez scored either side of Mohammad Safi quickfire double before Dirk Kuyt netted in stoppage time to make it 6-3.
