Basle 2 Fulham 3:Bobby Zamora's deadly double helped Fulham book their place in the last 32 of the Europa League with a 3-2 win over FC Basle tonight.
The former Spurs striker has had a running feud with the Cottagers for his lack of goals - but shut them up in style with a brilliant brace in freezing conditions.
Danny Murphy had the first chance of the game with a left-footed half-volley, and Zamora had a goal ruled out for offside on 16 minutes, when he coolly controlled and then converted a right-wing cross from Bjorn Helge Riise.
Alexander Frei wasted a good chance for the hosts when he showed too much of the ball to a brave Mark Schwarzer, but it was 1-0 to Fulham on 42 when Riise's cross from the right found Zamora unmarked in acres of space at the far post, from where he steered home a left-footed strike.
It was a case of deja vu two minutes later, with Riise again supplying a perfect right-flank cross for Zamora, who finished with his head this time for his fourth goal in three games.
Minutes after the interval, Zamora nearly bagged a hat-trick but his deflected 25-yard free-kick was well saved by diving goalkeeper Massimo Colomba.
And after Cagdas Atan had drawn a fine low save from Schwarzer on 62, the Australian stopper was beaten on 64 by Alexander Frei, who clinically converted a spot-kick that was awarded by referee Stefan Johannesson who harshly penalised Chris Smalling for a handball in the penalty box.
Roy Hodgson's nerves were settled on 77 minutes, when Zoltan Gera kept his cool to sidefoot home a fine pull-pack from Stephen Kelly on the left flank.
But those nerves were jangling for the final stages after Marco Streller headed home a corner at the near post with just three minutes remaining.
The hosts staged a late siege on the Fulham goal but the visitors bravely held to ensure the 1,200 travelling fans were warmed by European progress.
