Sophisticat firm fancy

Aidan O'Brien has had more than his share of warm favourites this week but he will have three chances in the Coronation Stakes to overturn today's hotpot Gossamer.

The pony-sized Gossamer ran away with the Irish 1,000 Guineas to make up for her only career defeat to date in the Newmarket Guineas.

Significantly that defeat came the only time she has raced on "good to firm" but her trainer Luca Cumani blames a slow pace and a stumble for that rather than the going.

A fast surface will be no hindrance to the Ballydoyle trio of fillies with Michael Kinane choosing to ride Sophisticat.

O'Brien said yesterday: "I thought Sophisticat ran a very good race to be third in the French Guineas considering she didn't get a great run through it."

The French Guineas hero Zenda has another pop at Gossamer after disappointing in the soft at the Curragh. But if the favourite is to be ruffled, the beautifully-bred, if slightly quirky, Sophisticat could be the one, especially on very fast ground.

The French Derby seventh Diaghilev will also love the conditions in the King Edward VII Stakes. "He didn't have much luck in the French Derby. Mick (Kinane) said he was unlucky not to be closer and he will like fast ground," O'Brien said.

After the reversals in the two-year-old races over the last two days there could be a little better price about the O'Brien duo in the Windsor Castle.

Ontario, who beat Pakhoes on his second start, appears the stable number one over the narrow Fairyhouse winner Newfoundland. "His first two races were on very bad ground and the fast should suit him better. He is in very good form," O'Brien said.

Willie Mullins runs both Sadlers Wings and Tuesday's Duke Of Edinburgh runner-up Holy Orders in the first where Dermot Weld gives Mutakarrim a first start of the season.

Selections: 2.30: Johannian. 3.05: Diaghilev. 3.45: Sophisticat. 4.20: Mr Dinos. 4.55: Ontario. 5.30: Idle Power.
