Spain endured a miserable start to the new tennis season yesterday when they lost three seeded players, including world number eight Carlos Moya, from the first round of the Sydney international tournament.

Third seed Moya, a finalist in last year's Sydney tournament, was beaten 6-7 6-4 6-4 by Sweden's Thomas Enqvist in sweltering conditions on centre court at White City.

Fifth seed Alex Corretja was beaten by by German qualifier Hendrik Dreekmann in straight sets.

Another German, world number 32 Nicolas Kiefer, completed a bad day for Spain when he eliminated fourth seed Sergi Bruguera in the only evening singles match, also in straight sets.
