At Saturday's meeting of the GAA's Central Council, a motion proposing the special congress on the Strategic Review Committee report be held on the weekend of May 24th and 25th was defeated.
Delegates claimed they needed more time to consider the report, which was released two months ago. This was despite the backing for the motion from President Sean McCague and Director General Liam Mulvihill.
A Mayo motion to the same effect is tabled for next month's Congress and there are now major doubts over whether it can succeed or even be heard. The matter is of some concern to the GAA hierarchy who fear that the SRC report may end up gathering dust as momentum behind its proposals is allowed to die over the summer.
There was also a strong protest from Tyrone about approaches to the county's minors from Australian Rules scouts before last year's All-Ireland final. The county, long a trenchant opponent of the International Rules project, claimed that the under-17 series between Ireland and Australia was a recruiting ground for the AFL.
In the Leinster under-21 football championship Kildare will meet Dublin in the semi-final while Wexford take-on surprise packet Wicklow.
