JAMIE SPENCER has been given a 23-day ban under the totting-up procedure after being found guilty of careless riding at Newmarket last Friday. The local stewards referred Spencer to the British Horseracing Authority disciplinary panel following his ride aboard Klynch in the newmarketracecourses.co.uk Handicap.
Spencer had already been banned for 24 days in the past 12 months for similar offences and he is now set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines. He was handed a three-day ban for the Newmarket offence which triggered a further 20 days under the totting up rules, although five days have been deferred.
Spencer was already due to be out of action on August 22nd, 26th and 27th but will now also sit out August 21st and 23rd-25th as well as August 28th to September 10th inclusive.
Meanwhile, Johnny Murtagh believes Fame And Glory has improved again since the Irish Derby as he prepares for the Tattersalls Million Irish Champion Stakes. The Montjeu colt has only lost once in his six-race career when he finished second to Sea The Stars in the Derby at Epsom.
The two are set to clash again in the 10-furlong heat and Murtagh is confident that Aidan O’Brien’s charge can gain his revenge on John Oxx’s superstar.
“Fame And Glory progressed a lot between the Epsom Derby and the Irish Derby. He was really impressive in the Irish Derby, and he has gone forward again since then,” said Murtagh.
“He has freshened up very well since the Irish Derby and has lots of pace, and we think he has improved again.
“It is one-nil to Sea The Stars in their private duel, he is the champion, but we’re hoping that we can level the score on September 5th.”
