McAllister leads way in Donegal

CYCLING:Ballymena CC rider Conor McAllister came out best in the Rás Dhun na nGall, held over the weekend in and around Killybegs. He finished seventh on Friday's opening stage, crossing the line in the same time as the day's winner Michael Duffy (Donamon Dynamos Ruby), writes Shane Stokes.

The following morning he moved to the top of the general classification when he was second in the short time trial, finishing 6.81 seconds adrift of the mark set by Marcus Christie (Usher IRC).

That afternoon McAllister extended his lead over closest challenger Aaron Buggle from three to seven seconds, gaining that time when he placed third behind breakaway companions Brian Quinn (Limerick CC) and Michael Duffy (Donamon Dynamos Ruby). He then successfully defended that advantage on Sunday's final leg of the race.

Fahy and Brennan take honours in Cork Marathon

ATHLETICS:East Cork's Roy Fahy won the second Cork City marathon in a time of two hours 33 minutes 55 seconds yesterday.

Fahy, who was third last year when the event was revived after a 21-year break, finished two minutes ahead of Eoin O'Connell (2:35:57) of Cork Triathlon Club/Serpentine. St Finbarr's Cathal O'Connell (2:36:17) finished third. The women's event was won by Sligo's Lucy Brennan, who crossed the line in 2:54:47.

There were over 8,000 entrants in the marathon which included relay teams of up to five people.

In a three-legged event, Cork pair Colin Carroll and John Meade set a new world record, finishing in a time of 3:25:39.

Former Irish Olympian Sonia O'Sullivan was the official starter of the event and took part in the final leg of the charity relay. "This was a fantastic event to be part of," she said afterwards. "It always means so much to run at home - and then to be joined in the Guinness Book of Records by two more Corkonians - it's a proud day for Cork."

Mosley's fate rests on vote

MOTOR SPORT:Max Mosley's fate as president of the FIA will finally be decided today, 64 days after allegations about his private life surfaced and having resisted all calls to resign.

Mosley faces a vote of confidence into whether he is fit to continue in a role he has held for 15 years. An extraordinary hearing of the FIA's general assembly will sit in judgment on Mosley, and by all accounts, the vote would appear to be too close to call.
