Hamilton thinks Germany will tell a lot

FORMULA ONE: Lewis Hamilton feels this weekend’s German Grand Prix will serve as a barometer for the remainder of the season.

After 10 of the 19 races it has so far been a Formula One campaign full of twists and turns, with no clear indicator as to who will be crowned world champion.

Ahead of Sunday’s race, Hamilton holds a 12-point lead over McLaren team-mate Jenson Button, with feuding Red Bull rivals Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel 17 and 24 points adrift respectively.

“I think this race will give us a very good read on form for the second half of the season,” said Hamilton.

“The big question mark for this weekend surrounds some of the other top teams. They’ve shown improved performance over the past two, three races, even if they’ve not fully managed to score the results their pace suggests. So it will be interesting to see just how close things have become.”

Lisa Maguire in stunning finish

GOLF: Lisa Maguire was on the heels of the leaders after the first round of the European Ladies Amateur Championship in the Czech Republic yesterday – thanks to a spectacular finish.

A birdie three on the 15th followed by an eagle three on the 16th helped the 15-year-old Curtis Cup star from Slieve Russell to post an opening three-under-par 69.

She is in joint third spot just two strokes behind leaders Marta Silva from Spain and Italian Giulia Molinaro.

Lisa’s twin sister Leona did not have such a good day returning a 75 comprising halves of 40 and 35, finishing with a bogey five.

Mary Dowling produced a spirited performance to stay in touch with a 73 – the easier back nine proving more difficult for her as she took 38 strokes coming home, having gone out in 35.

Victoria Bradshaw was round in 77 with halves of 37 and 40. She closed disappointingly with a double bogey five at the short 17th and a bogey five at the last.
