Britain's defeat 'unacceptable'

TENNIS:British Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) president Roger Draper condemned a fifth successive Davis Cup defeat as unacceptable yesterday and called for an immediate inquiry into the humiliating loss to Lithuania.

Britain, without number one Andy Murray, lost the Europe/Africa Zone group II first round match 3-2 in Vilnius on Sunday.

They now face a relegation play-off against Turkey in July to avoid dropping into group III, the bottom tier. They also missed out on a tie against Ireland in Dublin in the next round.

“I share the deep disappointment and frustration at this result. Five defeats in a row is unacceptable,” Draper said.

“So I have asked LTA player director Steven Martens to review last week’s performance and result and report back to me and the LTA main board as soon as possible.”

Three coins in a . . . mouth

RUGBY:Welsh legend JPR Williams, who was banned from driving yesterday for 17 months, sucked copper coins in a bid to beat the alcohol breathalyser, a court in Cardiff was told yesterday, writes Mark Hennessy.

Williams, an orthopaedic surgeon, had consumed nearly twice the legal limit when he was stopped by police on January 30th. He had been driven to London for a London Welsh match and driven back to Cardiff where he had left his car. He then started on the eight-mile journey home before he was stopped.

Police told Williams twice to take three one-penny coins from his mouth. The court heard there is a myth that copper from coins can interfere with breathalyser machines.
