A round-up of the other sports news stories in brief
Goal Mile at Belfield cancelled
It's the first time the charity event has had to be scrapped since it was staged in UCD in 1983. The first run took place in the Phoenix Park the previous year, writes Johnny Watterson.
The original event was the brainchild of former Goal chairman and international athlete Noel Carroll.
But there are nine other runs in the Dublin area over the Christmas period that are still going ahead, and Goal urges those interested in running to go to one of those.
The main run tomorrow is taking place in Tallaght Athletic’s Club 9.30am-noon, and there are runs in the Phoenix Park 10am-noon, Lucan Harriers 10am, Malahide Castle 11am and St Anne’s Park 11am.
Other runs are taking place at Irishtown Stadium and Skerries RFC on New Year’s Day 10am-noon.
The Santry run in Morton Stadium has also been cancelled.
Sale Sharks sack Brewer
RUGBY:Mike Brewer has been sacked as the head coach of the Sale Sharks, the club have announced. The former New Zealand international flanker was only appointed to his role earlier this year following a coaching reshuffle at the club.
Sale are 10th in the Premiership with just three wins from nine starts under Brewer’s direction, and they are unlikely to progress from their Amlin Challenge Cup pool following successive defeats against French side Brive.
Thirteen-year-old hits record 498
CRICKET:A 13-year-old has smashed the record for the highest individual score by an Indian schoolboy with a marathon innings of 498. Armaan Jaffer, nephew of former India Test opener Wasim Jaffer, racked up the runs playing for Rizvi Springfield High School against IES Raje Shivaji Vidyalaya in a three-day match in the under-14 Giles Shield tournament.
The right-hander struck 77 boundaries to surpass the best of 461 set by 15-year-old Ali Zorain Khan earlier this year.
“I am happy I got the record, but I am also upset that I missed the 500 by just two runs,” Armaan said after his two-day knock. “My coach told me to bat on as long as I wanted and not worry about the declaration.”
The highest individual score in a first-class match was West Indian Brian Lara’s 501 not out playing for English county Warwickshire against Durham in 1994.
Henson set to make his comeback from the bench
RUGBY: Gavin Henson is set to make his rugby comeback off the replacements' bench when Saracens tackle Aviva Premiership rivals Wasps at Wembley on St Stephen's Day.
Wales star Henson signed for Saracens at the end of October, ending his stint with the Ospreys.
He has not played since March last year, initially because of injury and then after he decided to take a prolonged break from the game.
Henson (28) recently completed a stint on the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing series, but rugby is now his sole focus as he looks to relaunch a severely-disrupted career.
Henson’s fellow substitutes include Alex Goode, who has been sidelined for almost a month due to injury, and former England scrumhalf Richard Wigglesworth.
Former England captain Steve Borthwick, meanwhile, returns to lead Saracens as they target a win that would take them second in the table above Leicester.
Saracens versus Wasps is now the solitary surviving Premiership fixture on Sunday following the severe weather.
