Mangan to chair FEI audit committee

EQUESTRIAN: Brian Mangan from Co Cork is the new chair of the Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI) audit and compliance committee having seen off rivals for the position from the Netherlands and Russia at last week's general assembly in Copenhagen, writes Margie McLoone.

The three-member audit and compliance committee oversees the operation of the FEI and has responsibility for internal auditing and ensuring compliance with internal regulations as well as compliance with FEI statutes.

Mangan, a chartered accountant who runs his own consultancy company and was nominated for the position by Horse Sport Ireland, will also sit as a non-voting member of the FEI Bureau.

The chairman of HSI, Joe Walsh, congratulated Mangan on his election.

“This is a very important position within the FEI and it is great that an Irish person was elected to the post,” said Walsh.

“Over 100 countries voted in this election, which was very keenly contested, and it is a great credit to Brian that the delegates placed their faith in him.”

Cragg puts in fine 5km performance

ATHLETICS:Alistair Cragg appears to have rubber-stamped his selection for next month's European Cross Country in Dublin by finishing fifth in a 5km road race in San Jose, California yesterday, clocking an impressive 13 minutes, 45 seconds, writes Ian O'Riordan.

This was Cragg’s first race since the World Championships in Berlin last August, and effectively proves his fitness ahead of the Europeans, which take place on December 13th.

Athletics Ireland had included Cragg on the Irish senior men’s team, pending some proof of race fitness, and yesterday’s result would suggest exactly that. A final decision on his inclusion is expected today.

Martin Fagan, who was also named on the Irish men’s team, ran well when finishing fourth in the Thanksgiving Day Road Race in Manchester, Connecticut. Fagan clocked 22.01 behind Kenyan winner Haron Lagat, who won in 21.40.
