New HSI winter series to increase participation

EQUESTRIAN SPORTS: Full details of a new national show jumping competition, which kicks off on Saturday, November 15th, in Claregalway, were published yesterday by Horse Sport Ireland, writes Margie Mcloone.

The HSI national winter tour 2008 runs over three qualifying weekends this month with the finals taking place on Saturday, December 13th, at Cavan Equestrian Centre.

It aims to increase participation in the sport as well as promote Irish-bred horses and ponies.

Speaking about the tour, which takes place when there is traditionally little activity on the home front, Joe Walsh, chairman HIS, commented: "We are looking forward to the new competition and I want to acknowledge the work of ShowjumpingIreland representatives to the HSI board in putting the competition together."

Meanwhile, the executive board of the Federation Equestre Internationale has called on the entire FEI dressage committee to resign immediately, citing "a series of issues indicating the current committee's lack of flexibility on certain key matters."

The communique from the FEI also states that the dressage committee "has been seen to work in isolation, not fully representing the interests of the dressage community as a whole".
