Del Potro 'playing with confidence':

TENNIS: An elated but exhausted Juan Martin Del Potro played down talk that he could win this month's US Open title, despite winning his fourth straight title after victory in the ATP event in Washington on Sunday.

The 19-year-old Argentine beat Viktor Troicki 6-3 6-3 to add the Washington crown to his victory last weekend in Los Angeles and to his wins in Stuttgart in Kitzbuehel last month. With his ranking of 19th, several of his beaten opponents have singled out Del Potro as a dark horse for the final grand slam event of the year."I am playing with a lot of confidence but I will be happy if I get to the quarter-final or to the second week," Del Potro said.

Habana to miss next match

RUGBY: South Africa wing Bryan Habana will miss Saturday's Tri-Nations match against Australia after failing a fitness test on an injured hamstring yesterday.

Habana limped off the field during South Africa's 19-0 loss to New Zealand last Saturday.

Coach Peter de Villiers has yet to decide whether or not to replace Habana in the squad. New Zealand head the Tri-Nations table with 14 points followed by Australia on nine. World champions South Africa have five.

Nadal confirmed as the world number one

TENNIS: Rafael Nadal has been confirmed as the new world number one in men's tennis, knocking Roger Federer off top spot for the first time in 237 weeks.

The 22-year-old Spaniard, who had been number two behind Federer for 160 of those weeks, has had an incredible season.

He became the first man since Bjorn Borg in 1980 to win the French Open and Wimbledon titles in the same year, winning at the All England Club for the first time in a classic five-set clash with Federer.

He underlined his current dominance of the game with Olympic gold in Beijing on Sunday and will now turn his sights on the US Open, which begins a week today.

"Nowhere in my best dreams I can imagine something like what I did this year," Nadal said after his Olympic victory.

"I am playing an unbelievable season, no doubt. I have to be very happy for everything.

"The feeling for sure is very happy for being number one, but the feeling doesn't change too much because the last years I did very well too."

The Majorcan has won eight ATP titles this season.

Brewer gets Scotland coaching job

RUGBY: As expected, former Leinster forwards coach Mike Brewer has been confirmed as the new Scottish forwards coach while another former employee of the IRFU, Graham Steadman, has been gainfully employed by their Scottish counterparts as Frank Hadden's new defensive coach, writes Gerry Thornley.

Brewer has been chosen from a shortlist that also included former Ireland forwards coach Niall O'Donovan, and the additional appointment of Steadman - defensive coach to Munster and Ireland for the last five years - will certainly give the Scots a degree of insider information for the Six Nations meeting in Murrayfield, not to mention Leinster's Heineken Cup pool bugbears Edinburgh.

"Anyone who knows rugby will have been impressed by the progress Leinster, the reigning Magners League champions, have made up front during his (Brewer's) three years in that role," said an "absolutely delighted" Hadden yesterday.

"Graham Steadman is among the most experienced defence coaches in the world having now spent five years in that position in rugby union with firstly Munster and then Ireland. That followed his 21-year-career as an international player and coach in rugby league."
