Doctor put on notice/DRUGS IN SPORT:The doctor at the centre of an Italian doping investigation has been summoned to appear before the country's Olympic committee.

Carlo Santuccione, who is alleged to have supplied athletes with banned substances, has been called to appear before CONI's anti-doping prosecutor on August 2nd.

GAA/Economical Cork make best use of numbers

Cork 2-14 Clare ... 1-11

A 14-man Cork powered to the Munster Under-21 hurling final at Thurles last evening.

Two second-half goals in six minutes were the key, giving Cork a seven-points cushion to carry them when they had John Halbert sidelined for a second yellow card in the 43rd minute.

Cork were the more economical in their use of the ball in a lively opening, Patrick Cronin pointing five frees, and they led 0-9 to 1-4 at half-time.

In contrast Clare posted seven wides and missed two great goal chances as Bernard Gaffney struck the crossbar and David Barrett hit the upright.

Colin Ryan's goal did give Clare a lifeline in the 27th minute, and a minute into the second half they were level, but five minutes later Halbert netted and then the Cork keeper, Kevin O'Halloran, converted a penalty.

Halbert soon got his marching orders but Cork, for whom Cathal Naughton, Patrick Cronin, Leigh Desmond, Eoghan Cadogan and Conor O'Driscoll excelled, held on comfortably.

Davydenko slips again

TENNIS:Russia's Nikolay Davydenko suffered his second successive first-round exit after the Frenchman Florent Serra fought back from a set down to upset the top seed 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 at the Amersfoort Open, in the Netherlands, yesterday.

The world number five had been dumped out in the first round of last week's Swiss Open by another Frenchman, Gael Monfils.

His Russian compatriot and second seed Mikhail Youzhny beat the Argentine Martin Vassallo Arguello 6-2, 7-5,

The third-seeded Spaniard Carlos Moya hit nine aces to brush aside Christophe Rochus of Belgium 6-2, 6-3.
