Carey gets Irish off to flyer in Sweden
Capt Shane Carey got the Irish campaign off to a flying start at the Swedish Nations Cup show in Falsterbo yesterday, winning the Derby qualifier speed class with Cashla Bay, writes Grania Willis.
The Limerick rider claimed the honours in 58.42 seconds.
Denis Lynch finished seventh in that class and went on to take second in the afternoon's speed class with Upsilon d'Ocquier.
Team manager Robert Splaine has called Lynch in to act as pathfinder for the Irish team in this afternoon's Nations Cup.
Lynch again rides Upsilon d'Ocquier and will be followed by Cian O'Connor on Complete and Ryan Crumley with Baltimore.
Carey goes in as number four with Foyle River.
The quartet for today's team decider at the European pony show-jumping championships has also been named.
Team manager Tom Slattery has put Richard Howley in first with Our Foreman, followed by Shane Connell with Murphy's Flight and Emily Turkington on Future Interest. Jessica Burke jumps at number four with Silogue Darkie.
Meanwhile, the Cork teenager Orla Kelly gave the Irish a second consecutive individual win by scoring in yesterday's Big Tour two-phase speed class in Freudenberg, Germany.
The 14-year-old crossed the line in 32.65 seconds to claim the honours with Western Wonder.
Shannon McKenzie was next best of the Irish, finishing 10th with Dollar Girl.
Leinster win in SA
Rugby
Leinster Schools kicked off their South African tour with a gritty, 18-6 victory over Wynberg Boys High School on Wednesday evening.
The visitors took the lead in the 10th minute with a Noel Reid penalty, before Gonzaga's Neil Hanratty touched down 15 minutes later. Wynberg replied with a penalty in the 28th minute to reduce the deficit to 8-3.
A Reid penalty three minutes after the break increased Leinster's lead, but the hosts replied 13 minutes later.
A try from Michael Noone, with David Joyce converting, pushed Leinster into an unassailable 18-6 lead.
Tomorrow they face Western Province in Newlands.

Irish debut for Lee on Dunne undercard
Middleweight Andy Lee will make his long-awaited professional Irish debut in Dublin next month, it has been announced.
The Limerick southpaw (22), undefeated after 10 pro fights, will box over eight rounds on the Bernard Dunne/Kiko Martinez undercard at The Point at the end of August against an opponent to be confirmed.
The former Irish Olympian, now boxing out of the Detroit Kronk gym, is eagerly looking forward to the occasion.
"I have been asked a thousand times over the last year when am I going to box in Ireland and now it is finally going to happen and I'm thrilled to be coming home," he said.
"I'm glad my fans in Limerick and across the country have now got the opportunity to come and support me and the other boxers on the show. Every time I come home I keep getting asked when am I fighting in Ireland. Well, the time has now arrived."
Lee's manager, Emanuel Steward, who has trained and managed over 30 world champions, is also looking forward to his trip to Ireland with the man he believes has the potential to be one of the biggest stars in boxing.
"I'm very excited about Andy making his Irish debut next month," Steward said. "It's Andy's 11th fight and the time is now right for boxing fans from across Ireland to see one of their most talented sons perform."
Dunne will defend his European super bantamweight title against Spaniard Martinez at The Point on August 25th.
