1974 –Willie John McBride's "99" call comes after a number of violent flashpoints throughout the tour but specifically in the third Test in Port Elizabeth. Basically, it was a case of one in, all in. The great Welsh fullback JPR Williams took it to a whole new level by running 50 metres to throw a punch.
1998 –Springbok captain Gary Teichmann is hit by a stiff arm in the first Test, prompting a range of assaults on Paddy John's side a week later.
Malcolm O’Kelly, Keith Wood and Victor Costello are the focus of some crazy behaviour. The cavalry – Trevor Brennan and Peter Clohessy – arrive off the bench.
“We didn’t go out to start anything,” said Ireland manager Donal Lenihan. “Our fellas just reacted to what happened on the field, where people like Dalton were way over the top.”
After a post-match discussion in the corridor between Lenihan and South African assistant coach Alan Solomons, it is agreed no player would be cited.
2009 –In the first Lions Test Bismarck du Plessis and Brian O'Driscoll clash, with the Springbok hooker cocking a fist before thinking better of it. O'Driscoll is seen to clearly mouth: "Bring. It. On."
In the second Test at Loftus, Luke Fitzgerald is eye-gouged by Schalk Burger, who is only sinbinned, while O’Driscoll later concusses himself and Danie Roussouw with a shuddering tackle.
