Spurs strike back

George Graham will not have enjoyed the defending but there was no mistaking Tottenham's spirit last night

George Graham will not have enjoyed the defending but there was no mistaking Tottenham's spirit last night. Deservedly trailing 2-0 they recovered to secure victory thanks to two goals from Sergei Rebrov and a winner from Les Ferdinand.

Mark Hughes had two efforts saved in quick succession and Francis Jeffers somehow shot wide. Given a second opportunity in the 25th minute, though, the striker made no mistake. Latching on to Ben Thatcher's poor backpass he clipped the ball past Sullivan. And it was little surprise when Alex Nyarko added a second just before half-time.

Spurs wasted little time in pulling a goal back. Ferdinand hit the post from a Stephen Clemence free-kick and Sergei Rebrov followed up to score his first goal for the club.

On the hour Ferdinand's header from a corner was saved by Paul Gerrard but the referee ruled that Gravesen had handled and Rebrov easily converted from the penalty spot. Almost immediately Ferdinand hit the winner.
