RUGBY minnows New Ross Vocational School met their Goliath at Arklow yesterday when they were well and truly slain by St Columba's of Dublin in this first round Senior Cup game.

St Columba's, with a 100 year tradition behind them, were on the road to victory as early as the second minute when their number eight Patrick Syme ran in the first of the 11 tries.

Six of those tries were scored by the forwards, who controlled the game from start to finish, denying worthwhile possession to a young New Ross side who admirably were taking part in the competition for the first time.

St Columba's, who led by 29-0 at the break, had their tries from Syme and Sean Halford (two each), William Passmore, Fergus Drake Lee, Conal Gibson, Joseph Moran, David Dobbs, Adrian Keane and Nicholas Patton.

But the Rathfarnham school succeeded only with four conversions, three coming from the boot of Nicholas Wheeler and the other from Gibson.
