Dublin Colleges tested champions St Kieran's College, Kilkenny, before the holders came good with a flurry of late points in Carlow yesterday.

St Kieran's led from the second minute when Richie Hogan pointed a free. But, while they were always playing catch up, the Dublin side showed tremendous commitment as St Kieran's led by 0-8 to 0-5 at the interval.

Dublin centre forward Maurice Nagle proved particularly troublesome for the Kilkenny defence, scoring 0-4 from play.

With just four minutes remaining and St Kieran's leading 0-14 to 0-11, Nagle gained possession close to the St Kieran's goal but Hogan made a superb block and cleared the ball.

Thereafter the champions added three unanswered points as the Dublin challenge finally wilted. St Kieran's can only have gained considerably from this very searching assignment and now advance to a semi-final meeting against Good Counsel of New Ross.
