LEINSTER SCHOOLS SENIOR HURLING A FINAL:St Kieran's College 2 -14, Kilkenny CBS 1-10
ST KIERAN’S College, Kilkenny, ended a five-year drought at Nowlan Park yesterday when they turned in a powerful closing quarter in the provincial decider.
A nicely-taken goal in the 44th minute by Pádraig Walsh, brother of senior hurler of the year Tommy, was the turning point. The goal won back the lead for St Kieran’s, 2-8 to 1-9.
They then took over the game and out-scored the opposition by seven points to one.
CBS had trailed for most of the opening quarter. But they found their range and four scores on the trot from Cathal Kenny (two) and free-taker Stephen Farrell (two) dragged them level at 1-3 to 0-6.
While the winners hit the front again, the main score of the half was an injury-time goal from Peter Vickery that left CBS leading at the break.
When they took over the third quarter, they looked potential winners. However, they failed to reflect their on-field dominance on the scoreboard, although they did get 1-9 to 1-6 clear by the 41st minute.
A point from James Gannon was badly needed by St Kieran’s. Next up was Walsh’s goal, after Michael Brennan did great work.
The score then was 2-7 to 1-9.
Suddenly St Kieran’s could do no wrong.
Against that, the CBS shooting was poor and they came up seven points short.
