ST MARY'S COLLEGE defeated Cistercian College, Roscrea 20-7 in this Leinster Schools' Junior Cup quarter-final at Donnybrook yesterday.

Rightwing Cathal Connolly opened the scoring with an eighth-minute penalty which was added to by a 28th minute try by number eight Shane Jennings. A loose clearance was gathered in by Connolly and he made ground, before feeding Jennings whose powerful run to the right corner was too much for Roscrea's defence. Connolly kicked a splendid touch-line conversion to leave St Mary's 10-0 up at the break.

The Roscrea outhalf Gavin Duffy ran over half the length of the pitch in the 52nd minute for a remarkable try. His conversion meant St Mary's led 10-7. But late tries from David O'Sullivan and William McCauley gave a more realistic reflection of St Mary's overall superiority.
