St Mary's 0 Wayside Celtic 1:WAYSIDE CELTIC made Saturday's tough trip to Cork a worthwhile one, advancing past a very unlucky St Mary's who will have sore memories of a missed penalty kick late on in what had been a very tight FAI Ford Cup third-round tie at Kilcully.
Substitute Ian Callaghan, who didn't start the game due to injury, made the most of what had been Wayside's first real period of domination when in the 70th minute he rose unmarked to powerfully head home Mark Hanlon's superb corner.
Mary's did have a few chances to take the lead during a first half which they dominated. And then going behind somehow gave them a second wind as the visitors sat back in the hopes of defending their lead.
Something they nearly paid dearly for when in the 79th minute, Alan Pratt took down Mary's left winger Darren Hill in the box. But Alan Young was down very sharp to centre back Aidan O'Callaghan's attempt.
Wayside also knocked St Mary's out of the FAI Intermediate Cup at the quarter-final stage, winning a home replay on the same scoreline.
Wayside boss Peter Lennon paid tribute to his players afterwards. "Like Mary's, we've had almost 50 games. But we came out of the traps much quicker after half-time.
"They got a great chance with the penalty but Alan made a great save. We came into this game with a lot of injuries and Alan was one of them. So I'm delighted for him because he's had a tough season."
