CBC Monkstown mounted heroic resistance but came up just a point short, the powerful Gonzaga College outfit winning 7-6 at Railway Union.

Gonzaga dominated play into a stiff first-half breeze but a CBC foray yielded a 29th-minute penalty, which captain James Kearns converted before nailing another penalty midway through the second half.

It meant Gonzaga had to come up with a try, and in the 57th minute their outstanding openside Andy Clarke jinked off his left foot to stride over, captain Stephen Murphy kicking the difficult conversion from the left.

It will take a replay to separate Newbridge College and St Gerard's following 5-5 deadlock at Kilternan yesterday.

St Gerard's scored an early try, secondrow Jack Conan capitalising on good work by winger Robert Myler. But they could not shake off resolute opponents.

It was level before the break as the Newbridge number eight William O'Brien got over from short range after good phase work following a five-metre tap penalty.

Terenure College coped better with a howling wind at Parsonstown and beat King's Hospital 17-0 in an excellent game.

Winger Colm Rowan snaffled a loose ball to score the opening try and make it 5-0 at the interval.

Number eight Adam Clarkin broke to the corner for the second, outhalf Dylan Olin converting from the touchline. And in the game's last action, Eoghan Kelly went over in the corner.

Clongowes Wood swept past Castleknock, 22-0, after a scoreless first half.

Brian Grehan touched down in the corner early in the second half before Steve McAuley scored under the posts following a scintillating run.

McAuley provided an action replay of his first try by again racing in under the posts.

Bryan Grehan rounded off the scoring with the conversion.

League champions Cistercian College Roscrea ran in eight tries in a comfortable 50-7 win over CUS in Athy.

The Dublin side were first to score, flanker Colm Driver blocking a kick by Roscrea's Matthew Staunton before touching down. Anthony O'Hara converted but it was all Roscrea from that point on. Brian Moylett finished off a multi-phase move.

Stephen Kelly then ran from his own 22 to put his side in front, Jack O'Connell's conversion the last act of the opening half.

Damien Egan, Shane Layden, Colm Moloney, O'Connell, Conor Finn and O'Hara added further tries for the winners.
