After an evenly-balanced opening period St Patrick's got their first goal in the 21st minute which came about after a poor defensive clearance.
St Patrick's, playing in the competition for only the second time, took full advantage of this confidence boost as they managed to hold on to their advantage to the finish.
Dundalk hopes of getting back into the game were further hit when Ray Cullivan's quickly-taken free-kick set up the alert Enda Gaffney for a second goal just before half-time. Trailing by two goals, 2-4 to 0-4, Dundalk battled bravely in the second half, but despite their best efforts they could not break down the St Patrick defence.
