The stars were out in force over the weekend as the inaugural Dr Joe Costello Memorial Celebrity Golf Classic took place at Galway Golf Club.

Some of the names to test their skills over the famous Galway club were Republic of Ireland international manager Mick McCarthy, former Liverpool great Kenny Dalglish, Irish rugby coach Warren Gatland and former Irish rugby international Eric Elwood to name just a few.

But there was to be no catching the team of former Irish rugby international Barry McGann. The 25 times capped outhalf - who also played soccer for Shelbourne - led his team to 96 points to secure a well earned victory.

McGann's team consisted of John Mulholland, his wife Margaret and their son Eddie and they had a two point winning margin over Joe Connolly's team.

Connolly, who captained the Galway Senior Hurling team to the 1980 All-Ireland title, was partnered by Michael O hUiginn, Dr Billy Herterich and John Carroll.

Country and Western singer Cathy Durkin, who teamed up with Michael O'Grady, Peter Coyne and Peter Coyne Junior, claimed third spot on 92 points.

The Classic was in aid of the Cancer Care West and it was hoped that over £50,000 would be raised for the charity.
