Staunton beaten to punch

Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. Well sort of

Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. Well sort of. Last week it was stated in Planet Rugby that in winning his first cap for Ireland, Jeremy Staunton had completed the set for Garryowen: that is to say that they had managed to have players capped by the national side in all 15 positions. Now this column, received an e-mail with the above information and given its impeccable source didn't really think about it for too long.

Fortunately this column is not in the habit of naming and shaming so the guilty party will not be made known to this column's handful - it's a select group - of readers. But thanks to Tom Nesdale and Owen Crotty who both wrote to clarify the position. Tom points out that Aongus McMorrow was capped from full back while at Garryowen. Of more recent vintage is the current Garryowen full back Dominic Crotty who was capped for Ireland as a full back against Canada in Toronto in June 2000.
