The leading Epsom Derby hope Greek Dance could miss Wednesday's Grosvenor Casinos Dante Stakes at York. Michael Stoute warned yesterday that he could run the colt, quoted at 12 to 1 for Epsom by Ladbrokes, in the following day's Michael Seely Memorial Glasgow Conditions Stakes instead.
A switch would mean avoiding the likes of Border Arrow, Saratoga Springs and City Honours in the Dante, but taking on Henry Cecil's highly-regarded Capri in the Glasgow.
"The Dante will be a very informative race - as it is every year - but Greek Dance is not a certain runner," Stoute said.
"He has got the two options, but I haven't made a decision and I haven't even spoken to his owner, Lord Weinstock. We will probably decide tomorrow."
The trainer is refusing to get carried away with the Epsom prospects of Greek Dance, who has been prominent in a very open and confused market on the Derby, ever since his colt won a Newmarket maiden last month.
"It is just so far, so good," Stoute said. "He has done nothing wrong on the course so far.
"But I don't think they know what to make of the market."
Meanwhile, punters look set to be denied any more clues about the Derby prospects of Haami until the day of the race.
John Dunlop had mentioned a possible tilt at Goodwood's Predominate Stakes for the colt, a 10 to 1 chance for premier Classic with Ladbrokes after his fifth place in the Sagitta 2000 Guineas.
But the trainer's racing secretary Marcus Hosgood said yesterday: "I think he will probably go straight for the Derby. He will be in good shape for Epsom."
Ladbrokes still bet 8 to 1 the field in the Derby, following the defection of Xaar, although they offer 5 to 2 Cape Verdi "with a run".
Chester Vase winner Gulland and 2,000 Guineas third Border Arrow share favouritism.
Betting: (Derby: Ladbrokes) 8-1 Border Arrow, Gulland, 10-1 City Honours, Haami, 12-1 Dr Fong, Greek Dance, 16-1 Saratoga Springs, 20-1 Croco Rouge, Courteous, 25-1 Bar.
