Waterford SF Final/Nire 1-5 Stradbally 0-3: An injury-time goal from substitute Diarmuid Wall sealed victory for Nire in a low scoring but hard fought Waterford SFC final in Dungarvan yesterday, thus denying Stradbally a record-breaking sixth county title in a row.
Playing with a first-half wind Nire raced into a three-point (0-4 to 0-1) lead at the interval, thanks to scores from Connie Power (two), Brian Wall and Liam Lawlor. Tony Grey was the scorer of Strabally's only point of this period. Nire had two excellent goal-scoring chances in that opening half, but they were denied by goalkeeper Eoin Cunningham.
The second half produced just four scores and it was Stradbally who got the ideal start when Niall Curran converted a free five minutes in. Eighteen minutes elapsed before Nire's Shane Walsh pointed. Stephen Cunningham's magnificient point with six minutes remaining was as good as it got for Strabally, though.
