Strategy points to brighter future

After the disharmony of 2000, the Irish Cycling Federation's fortunes appear to be improving

After the disharmony of 2000, the Irish Cycling Federation's fortunes appear to be improving. Earlier this week the ICF submitted their strategy document to the Irish Sports Council, which includes plans to develop the sport.

Then on Tuesday Blazing Saddles founder Eamon Duffy took up the position of CEO with the federation. Duffy is highly motivated and his appointment is expected to bring about significant change.

Meanwhile, mountain biker Robin Seymour, lying in 45th place, continues his UCI World Cup campaign this weekend when he contests the second round in Sarentino, Italy.

Elsewhere, Mark Scanlon replaces Shane Baker on the Irish team for Sunday's tough 102-mile Lincoln Grand Prix. The team is completed by Eddie O'Donoghue, Martin O'Loughlin, Tim Barry, Richie Cahill and former professional Morgan Fox.

At home the prestigious Shay Elliot memorial race is the highlight of the calendar. The 85-mile event starts as usual in Bray, but course changes will see the riders wind south to Arklow and then through Coolgreany, Ballafad, Aughrim and over Drumgoff before finishing in Roundwood.

Finally, the sixth National Coaching Forum takes place in the University of Limerick from June 8th-10th. Details are available from Paddy Doran on 01 8551522.
