University of Limerick had 10 points to spare over Waterford newcomers St Saviour's in the opening round of the Munster club football championship at Kilmallock yesterday.

It took the home side until the 21st minute to consolidate their position with a goal from Jonathan McCarthy and they led 1-5 to 0-3 at the break.

St Saviours' chances were not helped after they had a player sent off in 28 minutes and, again, when Ronan O Rahilly scored University of Limerick's second goal in 39 minutes, to take the score to 2-7 to 0-4.

Brian Arrigan pulled a goal back from the penalty spot, but University of Limerick pulled away again with points from Ciaran Daly, John Daly and Denis O'Driscoll.
