Arklow Town 1 UCD 3:ARKLOW TOWN stand-in goalkeeper Willie Doyle had the proverbial nightmare as his former club came from behind to progress to the fourth round.
Nominally a striker, a goalkeeping crisis at the non-league side forced Doyle between the posts, and he made two first-half howlers as UCD turned the game on its head.
Ironically, a goalkeeping blunder at the other end gifted Arklow the led on 15 minutes.
College goalkeeper Ger Barron allowed Stephen Murphy’s corner slip through his hands and Darragh Murray had a simple tap-in.
It might have been 2-0 a minute later when Graham Lawlor out-muscled Evan McMillan only to scuff his shot wide.
UCD took the sting out of Arklow to level from Doyle’s first mistake on 32 minutes. Keith Ward set up Timmy Purcell whose drilled, 25-yard shot squirmed under the body of Doyle.
Another howler by Doyle gifted UCD the lead on 42 minutes. Purcell worked a short-corner with Ward to cross and John Reilly’s tame header slipped through the hapless Doyle’s hands.
Ciarán Kilduff sealed UCD’s passage on 69 minutes by blasting home a cross from 12 yards.
