DIT 2-12 Kilkenny 1-8It was a gentle introduction to the rigours of O'Byrne Cup senior football for the students from DIT, but without having to produce anything extraordinary they passed this test at Freshford yesterday.
The early exchanges had been fairly even but the game turned sharply in favour of the understrength winners when they grabbed two goals within a minute approaching half-time.
Star attacker Damian Munnelly lashed home a 27th-minute penalty and within seconds Conal McGinnley drilled home a powerful second goal.
That quickfire action left Kilkenny 0-4 to 2-6 down at the interval and there was really no way back for them.
The students continued to pile on the pressure after the half-time break and were rewarded with two further points from the irrepressible Munnelly.
Kilkenny hit back for a 40th-minute goal from Michael Rohan but really never looked like seriously troubling the students.
