EUROPA LEAGUE:Luis Suarez is expected to discover early next week whether he faces sanction from Uefa for an alleged stamp during Liverpool's Europa League exit against Zenit St Petersburg on Thursday.
Zenit players accused Suarez of stamping on the Slovakian defender Tomas Hubocan in the 88th minute of Liverpool’s 3-1 win, a result that eliminated Brendan Rodgers’s team on away goals.
The Liverpool striker caught Hubocan twice after the left-back fell while shepherding the ball out for a goal-kick – on his leg and lower back. But neither the Dutch referee Bjorn Kuipers or his additional assistant behind the Kop goal deemed the incident deliberate.
Uefa have confirmed, however, that Suarez could face disciplinary action should Kuipers suggest they review the incident in his official match report.
European football’s governing body will decide whether their disciplinary committee is required at the start of next week. Uefa could then take retrospective action against Suarez and he could be banned for up to three European matches if found guilty of violent conduct.
The Uruguay international scored his 24th and 25th goals of an impressive individual season against Zenit, who now face Basel in the last 16. Defeat ended Liverpool’s last hope of silverware this season.
