THIS year's Tralee six day festival, which opens tomorrow, marks the golden jubilee of Ballybeggan Park Company which owns and runs the racecourse, though racing has taken place there from 1898.
Thanks to the main sponsors, record prize money is on offer and the going, good to yielding yesterday afternoon, should be no worse than yielding for some days to come as only showers arc forecast for the early days of next week.
Patrons travelling to the festival tomorrow via Limerick are advised not to take the coast road, as there will be traffic restrictions in Listowel due to the fleadh cheoil. The recommended route is through Castleisland, where signposts will be erected directing traffic to the racecourse.
The £10,000 Kerry Petroleum Shell Handicap is featured tomorrow. The lightly raced Super Gift, who last ran in a Group Two at Capanelle in April, won over this course last August and, having beaten Tout A Coup at Listowel, ran the English trained Last Second to a head in the Group Three C L Weld Park Stakes at the Curragh.
Ceirseach finished just one length adrift of Super Gift in the Curragh race and is now 3lb better off. Jim Bolger's charge has done little since running Tout A Coup to a short head at Gowran Park in June, but is clearly closely weighed with Super Gift.
Con Collins's charge Kimu, disappointing at the Curragh last time out, has prospects on his best form. Gan Saru beat Caudillo at Roscommon, but Super Gift is taken to give the weight.
Perhaps Collins will do better with Lower The Tone in the Kellihers Garage Liberator Handicap. The selection won over this course and distance in June and the ease in going should help.
Hotel Minella, now in training near Clonmel with the owner's son, John Nallen, makes his debut over fences in the Belvedere Trophy Beginners Chase. Dermot Weld, trainer of Super Gift, may also win the apprentice race with Troskie and the maiden with newcomer Swift Intuition.
. Apprentice Royston Ffrench incurred the wrath of the stewards for the second time in less than 24 hours at Thirsk yesterday. The 20 year old Shropshire lad, attached to Luca Cumani's yard, was stood down for four days (August 31st, September 2nd, 3rd and 4th) at Salisbury on Thursday night after causing interference on first past the post Nabjelsedr who was demoted to fourth. And he had two days added to his ban yesterday after partnering Perfect Bliss to a length and a half victory in the Jimmy FitzGerald Nursery.
