ATHLETICS: Joseph Sweeney of Coláiste Eoin in Stillorgan was crowned Irish schools senior boys' cross country champion on Saturday, reports Ian O'Riordan.
Sweeney took the 6.5km race at the ALSAA course in Dublin ahead of Mark Hanrahan from Douglas Community School in Cork, with Andrew Ledwith from St Joseph's, Athboy, taking bronze.
The team race was won for the first time by St Paul's, Raheny, who proved too strong for North Monastery, who surprisingly failed to get a finisher inside the top 10.
The senior girls' crown went to 16-year-old Linda Byrne from Presentation, Terenure, though champion Fionualla Britton failed to start, with Dublin's Manor House also taking their first team title. Ciara Durkin of Loreto, Balbriggan, won the intermediate girls' title, with the team award going to Loreto, Letterkenny.
David McCarthy of St Augustine's, Dungarvan, won a competitive junior boys' race, with the bronze medal there going to Castleknock student John Coghlan, son of former world 5,000 metre champion Eamonn. St Malachy's, Belfast, won the team title.

BASKETBALL: Star of the Sea recorded a 103-88 victory over Limerick on Saturday, which returned them to the top of the table and ensured the league title will be decided in the last weekend of the men's Superleague season, reports Ian O'Riordan.
Star dominated throughout, opening up a 28-19 first-quarter lead, and enjoying a 10-point cushion at half-time. Matthew Hall picked up his fourth personal foul early in the third quarter and sat out the remainder of the period, as Star cruised to victory. It means either Neptune or Star will be crowned champions next weekend.
The women's Superleague concluded this weekend, and St Paul's secured third position with a 75-69 victory over Tolka Rovers. St Paul's will now play Waterford Wildcats in the National Championships in two weeks, while UL will play Meteors.
