Schools' rugby Naas CBS 10 Mount Temple 7Naas CBS captured the Leinster Schools' Section A McMullen Senior Cup at their very first attempt at Donnybrook yesterday. It will sit sweetly beside the Duff Junior Cup, which they also won at the first time of asking three years ago with five of the players on show yesterday.

The dreary, wet day was very much at odds with this thrilling tie. In the eighth minute Naas scrumhalf Colin O'Brien cut inside a drift defence for a try that he converted himself. He added a penalty on the half-hour to make it 10-0 at the interval.

Mount Temple's hard-driving number eight, Stephen Boyle, gave his swarming back row a great go-forward target to hit and half-backs Simon Glynn and Hugh Gill used the ball smartly.

They got back into contention when blindside Shane Byrne took in a lineout and held on to the ball for his pack to drive him to the line. Centre Ian Denham kicked the conversion.

Dangerman Denham was a marked man and it was easy to be impressed by the vigilance and discipline of the Naas defence, particularly the midfield pairing of Max Bradley and Eoghan Conran.

Naas held firm against a late onslaught. They drove Mount Temple back in a scrum, resisted a five-metre lineout, a textbook blindside surge and one final thrust from centre Denham.
