Stephen Taylor galvanised his bid for the Irish Open junior tennis championship by toppling number three seed Sean Cooper in two tie-break sets in the quarter-final of the senior boys' singles at Fitzwilliam LTC yesterday. Unseeded Taylor proved the more resilient when the demands were greatest in both sets. He was patient too and pounced in the 22nd point of the first-set tie-break.

Ciaran Watson also arrived unexpectedly at the semi-final stage when his opponent, Cormac Jennings, seeded number four, was forced to retire in the final set. The bottom half semi-final pairing will see David Mullins take on Watson.
