Kildare SF

Croke Park yesterday confirmed that Niall Buckley is eligible to play for his club Sarsfields and Kildare in the current season. The player has been in Chicago for nearly two years. Last summer there was some speculation that he would return but the GAA's registration rules wouldn't accommodate the move in mid-season. Now the GAA's Management Committee, having sought clarification of the matter, have passed Buckley for the championship.

The player rejoined the panel two weeks ago and has surprised many with his high level of fitness. Buckley is thought to be close to making the starting line-up for Sunday's quarter-final with Carlow. Forwards Tadhg Fennin and Eddie McCormack will definitely be missing with hamstring injuries.

Meath will probably name their side tonight for Sunday's Croke Park match against Westmeath. Manager Sean Boylan is expected to have a full pick available but a chronic back complaint has affected Trevor Giles's form. The build-up to the weekend hasn't been very encouraging with the recent retirement of John McDermott and two challenge match defeats to Kerry and Limerick - although the latter took place without a number of regulars.

Galway SF

Derek Savage will definitely miss Sunday's Connacht SFC against Roscommon. He twisted his knee in a practice match on Saturday and ligament damage has been diagnosed. The full extent of the damage hasn't yet been ascertained but manager John O'Mahony says: "He's definitely out in the short term. It will be a bonus if he plays for us at all this season but we won't know the full story until later this week."

Savage has been in good form and is a formidable loss to the team. There are less pressing concerns about Matt Clancy (ankle) and Shay Walsh (thigh). Paul Clancy's long-term injury is clearing slowly, but the plaster cast on his leg has only just been removed.

Kildare's Niall Buckley, cleared to play by Croke Park.
