Aughavas took the glory but Corofin the victory in this absorbing encounter at Carrick-on-Shannon. The Leitrim champions put it up to the former All-Ireland winners, who can count themselves fortunate to have made it past the Leitrim first-timers in a highly-charged game which resulted in 10 bookings.
Corofin took an early lead through two pointed frees from top scorer Alan O'Donovan but were rocked by an Aughavas goal after six minutes when Colin McKiernan finished to the net.
The Galway champions had regained the lead by the 16th minute and an Alan O'Donovan goal helped them to a 1-5 to 1-3 interval lead.
Corofin extended their lead in the 39th minute with a David Morris point and their last score came from substitute Michael Donnellan in the 51st minute. Aughavas never gave up and were rewarded with points from Seamus McBrien and brother Fintan but it was too little too late.
