Tension evident as Leeds reach crossroads

UEFA Cup: Leeds United's season has reached one of those moments when it feels like it will either take off or dissolve. After all the off-field shenanigans and a mere two points from the last possible 15 in the Premiership, David O'Leary's side need to regroup tonight and rediscover the European verve that saw them put four past Anderlecht in Brussels on this day last year.

O'Leary last night agreed it is a possible turning point and restated his priority as finishing in the top four domestically, but there were a couple of references that told of the tension at Elland Road.

O'Leary appeared irritated 10 days ago by the chairman Peter Ridsdale's rather premature mention of the Intertoto Cup and last night, when talking of Champions League qualification, O'Leary said: "Then maybe the plc will think I'm not a bad manager."

That was followed by: "I think a lot of people forget - including a few within our club - that we've had a traumatic time this last year," and although O'Leary refused to elaborate, he clearly knows who he means. "One boozy drunken night has brought this club down," he said.

One of the principals of that night, Lee Bowyer, is likely to start tonight, as are the other two players with domestic suspensions, Danny Mills and Alan Smith. Robbie Fowler is cup-tied.

Earlier yesterday, O'Leary increased the pressure on Bowyer to repay the faith shown in him by signing a new contract with the club.

The midfielder has so far stalled on signing a new five-year deal which would reputedly increase his weekly wage from £16,000 sterling to £26,000 .

"I want Lee to stay here - and he knows it," O'Leary was quoted as saying. "This club has backed him unbelievably over the past couple of years. We have had to go through a lot to support him.

"It would be a massive kick in the teeth for the chairman, myself and the Leeds fans, who have supported him so wholeheartedly, if he ended up not signing this new contract,"

Bowyer has 16 months left on his present deal. His midfield partner tonight, Oliver Dacourt, has stressed his desire to stay at the club despite reports of a £14 million offer from Juventus.

That will be welcome news for O'Leary, who said last night: "We want to win this competition but this is a step up in class."

PSV may be that, especially as Mark van Bommel is fit again, but they are not the same force that defeated Manchester United 3-1 here in the Champions League last season.

They are third in the Dutch league and recently decided to retain their coach Eric Gerets despite a dodgy patch of form and a vote of no confidence from the players.

Rangers, who face Feynoord at Ibrox tonight, are concerned about an injury to Ronald de Boer.

Manager Alex McLeish McLeish said: "We will give Ronald every chance to recover from the foot injury he suffered playing for Holland against England last midweek. He has made progress in the last couple of days and we'll leave a fitness test as late as possible."

De Boer has been the Ibrox club's most consistent recent performer and McLeish said: "He has so much quality and has allied workrate to scoring goals and creating them. He would also love to play against his countrymen and I know they have huge respect for what he has achieved."

Rangers have alternatives should De Boer fall by the wayside, with both Neil McCann and Stephen Hughes available after slight knocks and Tore Andre Flo expected to fight off a stomach bug.

Feyenoord, who rejected a Rangers plea last night not to train on a sodden Ibrox, will look to Pierre van Hooijdonk as their main threat and the striker has been telling anyone who cares to listen that, as a former Celtic player, he was not best pleased to be left out of the Holland squad by the coach Advocaat - also Rangers' director of football - and so has a point to prove.
