PLAY MISTY FOR ME:THE weather – as much as the golf – is likely to be a hot topic here at the USPGA at Atlanta Athletic Club where temperatures are expected to hit 100 degrees Fahrenheit in the coming days, with the threat of thunderstorms and lightning for the weekend.
In an attempt to beat the heat index for spectators, water misters – huge fans which blow a fine mist – have been erected atop the grandstands around the seventh, ninth and 18th greens while spectators are allowed bring in water (in sealed containers, with the label removed if it is not the official water of the PGA). They may also bring in empty containers that can be filled at various water stations around the course.
For players who walk up to 10 miles during a round and for caddies who walk as far toting 40 pounds of golf bag, the heat will also exact some uncompromising demands.
“Dehydration alone can decrease performance by up to 10 per cent,” explained David Donatucci, the director of fitness and performance with the PGA of America. “You got a 150-yard shot, for most of these guys it’s a pitching wedge. (With dehydration), you hit it 135.”
