Long live the king

And so the end is nigh, Henry Shefflin, arguably the greatest hurling player of all time, is likely to announce his inter-county retirement later today.

The great Kilkenny forward has called a press conference for midday at Langton's Hotel in the heart of the Marble City, where he is expected to call time on a peerless career which has produced 10 All-Ireland titles, 10 Leinster titles, 11 All-Stars and three All-Ireland club titles, amongst other gongs.

Keith Duggan has looked back on a mesmerising career which despite lasting for 16 years seems to have gone by in the flash of a hurley.

Sean Moran has ranked Shefflin in the pantheon of hurling greats and says many will be privileged to be able to say for the rest of their lives that they saw him play.

McClean injury puts Brady in the picture

Despite having only played 10 minutes of competitive football in the past month Robbie Brady could be set for a place in Ireland's starting line up for Sunday's Euro 2016 qualifier against Poland after Wigan's James McClean limped out of training yesterday with an ankle injury.

Meanwhile Bournemouth midfielder Harry Arter spoke to Mary Hannigan about his first international call-up and the support he has received off brother-in-law and former England midfielder Scott Parker.

Preston born Kevin Kilbane won 110 international caps for Ireland, and he believes foreign-born layers who opt to don the green at international level must be fully committed to the cause.

League of Ireland champions Dundalk were too strong for unbeaten Bohemians last night, running out 3-0 winners at Dalymount Park after Keith Long's Bohs were reduced to 10 men.

Elsewhere Shamrock Rovers moved up to second with a 2-1 win away at Sligo while St Pat's saw off Derry City 2-0 at Richmond Park.

Warm-ups selling like hot cakes

There has been an upsurge in ticket sales for Ireland's World Cup warm-up games against Scotland and Wales at the Aviva following on from last weekend's Six Nations win, with 35,000 now sold.

In his column Alan Quinlan has paid tribute to his old team mate Paul O'Connell who was inspirational in leading Ireland to back-to-back championships.

Ruby odds-on for jockeys title

With the pick of Willie Mullins' yard at the Fairyhouse and Punchestown festivals Ruby Walsh is an odd-on favourite to pass the injured Mark Walsh and seal a tenth jockeys title in May, putting him level with Frank Berry.
